The County Line

As in, the Party Line of the County.

Actually, this is good stuff. Go to the county website.

http://www.co.page.va.us

In an attempt to be responsive, which is what we all want, the county administrator has started posting explanations of issues there. You select Our Government, and then select FAQs.

There are three FAQs posted so far.

1. The Reassessment Process

2. The Battle Creek Landfill

3. Economic Development Efforts

Yes, it's the Party Line. but it's a start at being responsive, and I'm really impressed with it as an effort.

I applaud Mark Belton and the county administration for doing this. Information disseminated like this gives the citizens a good opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and participate in the process of governing.

Thank you, County Administration Team.

Good stuff! Thanks Alice and County Admin folks. It might even be a good idea to publish this kind of stuff in the PN&C as a weekly byline on what is happening in the county.

I would like to see more in-depth investigation and reporting in the Page News. The Page News is OUR paper. We depend on it. No other paper cares about the issues of Page County. What local government does has more impact on our lives than anything that happens in Washington D C. I would very much like to see the Page News be more "fourth estate-like" in the sense of digging into the issues of our local government.

where exactly is this on the website, I couldn't find it...

Do you really thing some folks in he "establishment" want the paper to become the "forth estate"...do you see the reaction the paper gets when they report hard facts? Please, keep dreaming...

That would require a reportorial and editorial staff with far more maturity and life experience. The PNC editor first needs a course in basic remedial grammar and spelling. The spelling could be corrected if he and his staff would use the spell check feature of their word processor program. Grammar is more difficult. Editor Randy needs a quick remedial grammar refresher in basic grammar rules. The paper currently is a classic textbook example of pronoun errors (pronouns should agree with antecedents in number and gender), dangling participles, et cetera, et cetera. The journalistic quality at present isn't on a par with a high school paper. How could it be the fourth estate of Page County? Maybe Randy could sit in on a journalism classes at Luray High School.

We need an editor with the journalistic expertise of Cort Kirkwood, who was PNC editor before being promoted to an executive position at the Daily News-Record. Writing quality of the paper has gone steadily downhill since his departure to Harrisonburg.

Regarding the question of where exactly is it posted:

On the county website, (click on the link posted in the blog), you select Our Government, and then select FAQs to find The County Line.

Regarding whether some folks in the "establishment" want hard facts investigated and posted.

With luck, those folks who are currently in the establishment, will not continue to be, as long as us "dreamers" keep dreaming up ways to get the word out. Unless, of course, the folks who are in the establishment WISE UP, and pay attention to the needs and wants of their constituents. But I even dream that it's possible they will do that. They're not stupid, and I even dream they will change their ways before the voters go to the polls in two years.

Regarding whether Randy will convince his staff to use spell check, I can not say.

Regarding whether Randy will get a staff who is older with more life experience, . . . nah, he can't afford that. But can he get young people to do an investigative, idealistic job? I think he can. Young people like to dig up dirt. All Randy has to do is encourage it.

Government is so much more fun when there's a newspaper keeping them in line.

Please...nice, now go to the "they don't know grammer card"...I hardly think this is a problem..but extra points for using the term "antecedents" in your post bro! Wow!

Sure, I'd would be willing to bet that when you put out 50 + pages a week you're going to make a syntax or gramatical error on occassion...or - heaven for bid - misspell a word!!!!

NOOOOOOOO!...whatever...anyone who lived in this community when Cort "I make George Allen look like Fidel Castro" Kirkwood knows that guy was a first class dweeb....just take a look at the editorials he writes in the DNR everyday..very, very scary...

stop trying to make the problems with this disfunctional County government the paper's fault...you people are very silly and desperate. Just listen to yourself for a moment...funny!

Chris says there seems to be no traffic on this sight no more. Alice people just don't care about the issues.
